What to Expect from Counselling: Taking the First Step

Considering starting counselling can evoke a variety of emotions. You might feel optimistic about having someone to confide in, yet also anxious about what the experience will entail. Maybe you're uncertain about how to start, what to discuss, or if counselling is the right choice for you.

If this sounds familiar, you are not alone.

As a counsellor, I understand that taking the first step can feel daunting. Reaching out for support can mean acknowledging feelings or experiences that you may have been carrying for some time. You do not need to have all the answers, know exactly what you want to talk about, or feel ready to share everything straight away.

Counselling offers you a space that is dedicated to you — a place where you can slow down, explore what is happening in your life and begin to make sense of your thoughts and feelings in your own time.

A space where you can be yourself

Life can sometimes feel overwhelming. You may find yourself putting other people's needs first, keeping your feelings to yourself or trying to manage everything without support.

Counselling gives you the opportunity to step back from the demands of everyday life and focus on how things are for you.

My aim is to offer a welcoming, respectful and non-judgemental space where you can feel listened to and supported. You can talk openly about what is troubling you, explore difficult emotions or simply begin with whatever feels most important that day.

There is no right or wrong way to begin, and you do not need to have everything worked out before your first session.

What happens in your first session?

Your first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another. We can talk about what has brought you to counselling, what you would like support with and what you hope to gain from the process.

You may already have a clear idea of what you want to explore, or you may simply know that something does not feel quite right. Both are perfectly okay.

I will explain how I work, discuss confidentiality and give you the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. We can also explore what feels comfortable for you and how we might work together.

Building trust takes time. You will not be expected to share more than you feel ready to, and we can work at a pace that feels manageable for you.

You don't have to have the right words.

Sometimes, finding the words to describe how we feel can be difficult. You might feel confused, overwhelmed or unsure why certain things are affecting you.

You do not need to explain everything perfectly. We can take time to explore your experiences together, gently unpack what feels difficult and consider what might help.

Counselling is not about being judged or told what to do. It is about having the opportunity to understand yourself more deeply and discover what feels right for you.

Moving forward at your own pace.

Everyone's experience of counselling is different. There is no fixed timescale for personal growth, and progress does not always happen in a straight line.

Some sessions may bring a sense of relief or clarity, while others may leave you with things to reflect on. Together, we can review how counselling is feeling for you and what you need from the process.

My role is to support you as you explore your experiences, develop greater self-awareness and consider ways of moving forward that feel meaningful to you.

Taking that first step.

If you have been thinking about counselling but feel unsure about making contact, I hope this has helped you understand a little more about what to expect.

You do not need to wait until things become unbearable before seeking support. Sometimes, having a space to talk, reflect and feel heard can be a valuable step towards understanding yourself and what you need.

If you feel ready to find out more, I welcome you to get in touch. You can ask questions about counselling, how I work and whether my approach feels right for you.

There is no pressure to have all the answers. We can begin with a free introductory call.

You deserve time and space to focus on yourself, your experiences and your well-being.
